Prepare all the surfaces you are about to paint as best as you can to get the most professional-looking finish.
New surfaces
New surfaces usually require less preparation work. Appearance of white powder means high salt content inside plaster. Before applying any paints, smooth the plaster with sand paper after it is completely dried and turned to a lighter colour. If there is too much white powder, apply primer after cleaning to protect the wall from corrosion by salt.
Painted surfaces
Clean the surfaces with spongy or cloth, wash it down thoroughly before painting.
- Allow the surface to dry completely after washing with water
- Treat any mould with diluted household bleach
- Sand glossy old paints with sand paper to increase film adhesion
- Scrape out all the loose paints with paint scraper or wire brush, then smooth with sand paper
- Small cracks and dents can be filled in with multi-purpose filler, but larger ones need more careful treatment. There is a wide range of fillers available to help you prepare for the perfect finish
Walls with old wallpaper
Remove old wallpaper before painting. The easiest way to do this is to wet it completely with warm water and detergent, followed by stripping with a stripper. Wash away any remaining glue and smoothen with sand paper, allow to dry before painting.
