When both ceilings and walls are to be painted, start at the top and work down, beginning with the ceilings, next paint the walls, then the doors and windows, followed by the skirting boards and the trim.
Rooms The painting sequence should be from the top to the bottom, from large to small:
- ceilings
- walls
- window frames
- doors
- door frames
- skirting boards
Useful tips: Work on the edges or around the lights or sockets with small brushes, then paint in broad bands with big brushes or rollers
Ceilings
- Paint along the edges of ceilings or lamps and lanterns with a small brush
- Then, working from the paint in broad bands away from the light with a larger brush or a roller
Walls
- Use a small brush to paint the edges of wall and decoration on the wall
- Continue the rest of the wall with a 4 inch brush or a roller
Doors The following sequence make painting different kinds of door more manageable

- Vertical sections around the panel, ending each bit with light, vertical brush strokes, following the wood grain

Useful tips: Use smaller brushes when painting edges, corners or frames with uneven surfaces
Cupboards Follow the sequence listed below:
- Inside cupboard, bottom sides
- Inside cupboard, upper sides
- Inside cupboard, left and right sides
- Inside cupboard, lower sides
- Cupboard door, inside and out
- Outside cupboard, upper sides
- Outside cupboard, left and right sides
- Cupboard door, inside edges
- Cupboard frames
Useful tips: Don't apply too many paints when painting frames and edges. Scrape away flaking paint with fine sandpaper, to prevent old paints to clot the door
Skirting boards Follow the sequence listed below:
- Upper side
- side closer to the floor
- Middle part
Useful tips: Solvent borne paints are sticky, avoid using a large brush, a 1-2 inch brush is the best
